(( Note: Taking place after Okehazama, so no conflict there. If for some freak reason I die in that battle, well... Call this non-canon like the battle royale quest seems to be.

The land of Satsuma beheld many oddities, even for native Japanese, for there were but few clans taking refuge on this exotic isle. Kenji had seen a few intriguing sights during his previous and sole trip to the isle, but now he came in search of a rumor he had overheard while travelling the Kanto region. Numa Castle, an age old, abandoned fortification said to be frequented by treasure hunters, haunted by spirits, and populated with monsters and valuables alike. A true adventure if Kenji had ever heard of one.

So out from the swamp he would trudge this morning, armed and ready to go exploring as he approached the gates to Numa Castle. His first intended path would be the middle route.

"Should be fun," commented the shugyosha, talking aloud to himself.

Path: MIDDLE CHAMBER. Your objective is to slay as many monsters as possible, retrieve the Daimyo's treasure, and making it back to the entrance. More enemy deaths will yield better rewards for the players. You can not lose an ally. Death or incapacitation of one member of the party will lead to failure for the entire group.

Kenji, approaching the middle door, would find himself pulled into that chamber by some unseen force, spitting him out on the other side! If he turned around, he would see the door was covered by a thick veil of darkness, and the stench of death and decay would greet him upon entering this room! No sooner had he touched the floor than he heard unnerving shrieks, and the bodies that lined this large chamber would start to rise, running at him with their weapons drawn!

Kenji would indeed glance behind him to note the shroud of darkness concealing the door that he was, apparently, yanked through by an invisible force. "Well, that was new... the merc mused mentally, surprised, but not too bothered. It was when he redirected his attention forward, hearing the unholy wails of the dead, that he wondered what he was getting into.

No, that wouldn't do.

Steeling himself for battle, and letting adrenaline begin to flow within his veins, Kenji drew his Yawarakai-Te and stood fast against the charging soldiers of the dead. He stepped in toward their ranks as they came close and swept his blade fast across their necks, hopefully beheading their damned bodies. For those who survived, he stepped again as he drew his masterwork katana, alternating between parrying attacks headed his way and cutting into his enemies.

Kenji's tactic was only briefly successful! He would decapitate a total of two enemies before they would overcome his defenses, slashing lightly at his right arm and kicking him backwards onto the ground! If he didn't react fast enough, he'd have a bunch of blades sticking out of his body, as they charged at him attempting to stab him while he was on the floor!

The moment Kenji felt himself hit the floor on his back, he immediately kicked his legs over his head and rolled backwards back to his feet. His arm stung a little, but it was of no real hindrance. Settling back into defensive stance, he decided the next best tactic would be to pick off one enemy at a time, cutting down the closest of the undead each time they came while backing away to keep out of striking range of the horde, making sure not to back himself into a wall or door.

Kenji would find a bit more success, as his slashes would take out another three undead as they approached him! There were only five left currently! However, he would find his arms grabbed by two of the undead, they were trying to hold him in place as a third would charge forward, planning to stab Kenji through the stomach!

With little warning, Kenji found himself restrained and close to being impaled. He would not let this be the way he died. Not here, alone, in a long-abandoned castle. Summoning his might and will, he kicked out the legs of the undead on his left arm, then used its lack of stability to yank it in the way of the blade coming for his stomach. If successful, and he didn't have a new belly piercing, Kenji would proceed to hack away at the three undead as best as he could in order to free himself.

What a roaring success! Not only did Kenji NOT get impaled, but he would ensure that he would hack the rest of the undead to pieces without taking any more damage!

He'd have a brief moment to rest, before more shrieks filled the room! If he looked at the walls, 5 demonic looking creatures would be crawling along them, their claws and teeth razor sharp! They jumped to the floor and charged at Kenji!

Kenji took advantage of his apparent rest period to stretch, not having had the chance to do so before his engagement with the undead. When he heard the ghastly yells and looked to the walls, he found a curious quintet of demonic monsters ready to attack. He hadn't fought such creatures before, but he would not underestimate them. Settling into a defensive stance, he intended to block, dodge, and counter his new enemies' attacks as they came.

Two of the creatures would meet a dastardly end at Kenji's blades as they attacked him, only to get countered! The other three surrounded him, charging from all sides and planning to claw away at whatever the could reach!

Three monsters, two swords... This could be tricky, and end horribly if Kenji make a poor choice. At the same time, playing it safe could end in him getting sundered from one side, as he could only handle two. He decided to make a move that he considered equally safe and risky: pick one of the charging monsters and rush them with his swords, intending to cut himself a path out. In the worst case scenario, he theorized, he would only end up harmed by one while the other two would come up short. In the best, well...

Kenji would successfully cleave through the creature in front of him, but wasn't fast enough to avoid being clawed in the back on his way out! While they weren't deep, those cuts stung! Ouch! If he turned around, he'd find them continuing to charge at him, one of them leaping into the air, wanting to clamp its jaws around his throat!

The cut across Kenji's back was shallow, but still stung. Yet another diminutive injury. He could get worn down if he kept racking those up. He did indeed turn, swords at the ready, and took careful note of the beast bearing down upon him. With a level head and reflexes on high, the merc - listening for the other beast as he did this - waited and swung a heavy overhead slash with his Yawarakai-Te as the airborne monster approached. Should he succeed, his masterwork katana is free to fend off the last of the beasts, and counter if given the opportunity.

Kenji's slash would find success in slaying the airborne creature! In addition, he would be able to strike out and slay the remaining creature without fail!

A veil of light appeared opposite the entrance, and when it dissipated, the Daimyo's chest could be seen atop a platform!

Taking a moment to settle down, but maintaining readiness and awareness, Kenji began walking toward the other end of the room toward the Daimyo's chest. He kept his swords out, ready to strike anything that came at him at a moment's notice.

As Kenji approached the chest, nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary! It wouldn't be until he grabbed it and got ready to leave would he hear more shrieks!

From the walls came five more of the creatures from before, and masses of dark energy would appear along the chamber, each one producing a Crawler! A quick beast with no arms, they looked like running fish! Demon fish! There would be ten of them! Everything rushed towards Kenji!

Kenji calmly set the chest back down as he turned to gauge his enemies. Fifteen, including ten spry-looking fish monsters... No arms, which was good, though their agility could be troubling if he let them make like piranhas and swarm him en masse. He already had his stratagem in mind.

Settling into a fairly loose, mobile stance, Kenji strafed to one side of the oncoming horde, looking for the stragglers that had yet to merge with the main group. While keeping an ear on the rest, he made to cut down as many stragglers as he could with precise slashes, attacking crawlers and creatures alike.
